Virtual Project Management: Use of BIM for CQM by a PMP

On June 30th, Project Management Institute Great Lakes Chapter's Construction Community had its second Discussion Panel to collaborate and share knowledge on how to improve Quality and promote Quality Excellence in Project Management with the topic of using Building Information Modeling for Construction Quality Management! (#BIM4CQM)

CQM Community Experts gathered to share their perspective as follows:

  • Construction Management/General Contractor's Perspective from Haitham Sarsam, Director of Projects at O'Brien Construction
  • Risk Management Perspective from Laura Suter, Director of Quality at Sachse Construction
  • Owner's Perspective from Austin Holcomb, Program Manager at Kramer Management Group

Then we had practical solutions offered through BIM Demonstrations as follows:

  • Educator's Perspective from Dr. Emrah Kazan, Lecturer at Wayne State University
  • Supplier's Perspective from Erin Caszatt, Structural Steel Detailing at Division 5 Metalworks
  • Consultant's Perspective from Art Theusch, Owner of Collaborative Consulting

Finally, Dr. Ahmed Al-Bayati, Professor at Lawrence Tech University offered the latest research and development of BIM 8th Dimension for Safety Management as a great benchmark for use of BIM for Quality Management!

Key Points and Take-Aways:

The discussion and key points made in this virtual meeting that would be excellent takeaways for the audience were as follows:

  • PMBoK has the framework to fit any methodology such as BIM application within any organization
  • PMBoK Construction Extension is a great place to add a chapter for BIM Execution Plan Best Practices for Construction Project Management Professionals (#CPMP)
  • PMBoK promotes Quality Excellence by instituting a Plan, Execute, Control & Monitor, then Close approach and BIM is an excellent tool to utilize

  • PMPs should promote use of innovations such as BIM in their organizations and take the lead in implementing it as a great Quality Management Tool & Technique
  • Construction Project Development Owner's will benefit the most of having a Single BIM Model with all its dimensions start as early as possible and shared with all other entities from Conceptualization to Design to Construction to Operation and Facility Management!

  • Contractors will gain profitability and productivity by reducing coordination problems and detecting clashes on virtual models at less cost than rework and corrections in the field during production
  • Suppliers and Subcontractor Project Managers utilize BIM Models as a great Communication Tool with their prime contractor and A/E
  • Architects and Engineers will be more efficient and lean in their Drawing and Specification development to meet Owner's Quality Expectation of the final product

Universities such as #WayneState and #LTU and associations such as #AGC offer excellent programs to educate and certify PMPs to utilize BIM, but it is not a requirement and they can learn it on their own through other routes such as online tutorials and hands-on experience

National Association of Women in Construction #NAWIC encourages young lady engineers to pursue a career in BIM Modeling for the Construction Industry

  • PMPs don't have to learn how to model for BIM but need to know how to utilize the reports generated by a BIM Modeler to plan, coordinate and request information
  • BIM is not only for Complex and Expensive projects and could be utilized for any projects to institute a Preventive and Proactive Quality Management Program
  • Cost Savings through a proper BIM utilization reduces risks, safety issues, quality concerns and promotes Lean Construction to reduce waste and overproduction to offset the cost of hiring a BIM consultant and even make extra profit
  • BIM Models can organize and collect information to integrate all aspects of a Construction Project such as Time, Cost, Quality, Safety, Risk, Procurement, and Resources as an excellent Communication tool for all Stakeholders

  • BIM 8th Dimension utilizes a BIM Model to prevent Safety issues by converting regulations to practical usable data to highlight danger areas and plan Safety more effectively
  • BIM for Quality Management could benchmark from innovation in Safety Management and convert Owner's expectations from Specifications into its Information Database and Model
  • Unlike other parts of the world, Construction Quality Management in the US hasn't been developed as strong as Safety Management due to a lack of regulations and enforcement from municipalities. In Europe for example, it is now a requirement to have LOD200 BIM Model for permitting and design reviews!

  • PMI could promote use of BIM in Construction Projects by including a chapter in its PMBoK Construction Extension
  • Construction-related parties should encourage BIM4CQM as a Blue Ocean Strategy to promote Quality Excellence through Technology-Based Innovations to avoid falling behind from competitors and take the lead in pioneering Data-Driven Project Management to maximize Business Development gains.
  • There are more discussion topics to be discussed and would not be able to cover all the benefits of BIM4CQM in a three-hour discussion panel, more participation and perspective inputs are expected in the near future!
