Quality in Project Controls
Our September 29th PMIGLC CQM Virtual Discussion Panel was another success! With over 100 people registered and 75 people on the Zoom Conference and in our Live Feed Channel, we reached out to the Construction Project Management Community like never before!
It was a long two hours program of compacted information and best practices shared by our panelists from different views and perspectives on what is a Quality Project Control, but we hope that more participants would stay and join us for the discussion segment, as well.
Free access to so many professionals that are passionate about collaboration and sharing knowledge is unheard of; however, thanks to PMIGLC, CQM has made it possible! If you are interested in the newest trends and discussions on Philosophies & Methodologies and Tools & Techniques, in the Engineering, Construction Management, Quality Management field, this is your forum to communicate with your community!
These PMIGLC CQM Discussion Panels are on Quarterly Basis and our next event will be announced on http://cqm.us Please make sure to subscribe to CQM Youtube Channel so you could receive a notification when we go Live for our events.
Quality in Project Control and Earned Value Management
As Construction Project Managers we know that Scope Management without a proper Construction (Resource) Plan is impossible. All project-related activities are derived from a Construction plan (CP) and must always be generated first, or as PMPs know it as a Project Management Plan. In a collaborative team, the way CP is communicated is through a Schedule and it serves as a vehicle for work structure decisions to be communicated from the GC to the subcontractors. As the project becomes more complex, the quality of this planning is diminished and usually requires more resources such as the bigger Project Engineering Department to perform all the required Project Controls.
In our Project Management Institute Great Lakes Chapter's Construction Quality Management Community (PMIGLC CQM), CQM experts dedicated to sharing and collaborating their best practices to improve our Construction Industry as part of our professional conduct gathered in this virtual discussion panel. We explored ways our Construction Project Management Professionals (CPMP) could improve their processes and approach to CQM for better Quality in Project Controls.
Our guests were experts in the Project Control field and elaborated on their thoughts, opinions, and best practices on the following topics:
- Scope Management through Construction Plan
- Cost Loaded Schedules and Earned Value Management
- Use of EVM for better Construction Planning
- LEAN Construction Value Stream Mapping for better Pull Planning
- 4D and 5D BIM use to achieve Quality in Project Controls
Our September 29th Discussion panel was composed of experts from Barton Malow that shared some of their best practices, a Project Manager from JJ Barney that will share some of his lessons learned, a Project Control Specialist from DTE to give us an Owner Perspective, a Ph.D. candidate from Wayne State University that will present his findings on the use of EVM in the construction industry, a Project Control Consultant from QPMO demonstrated his way of Weather Analysis, and a BIM expert demonstrating the use of 4D and 5D BIM for Project Controls.
Videos to the Panelists' Presentations
Dr. Hani Emari, PMP presented an Introduction to the topic and purpose of the meeting. He elaborated on the reason for selecting the guests and their disciplines.
Branden presents Barton Malow's methodology in developing Work Packages for WBS and developing the Earned Value Management Accounts. We discuss CII Advanced Work Packaging and how to apply LEAN Construction principles to improve it.
Husam Kafaji CE, DTE Energy
Husam is a DTE Project Control Specialist and has expectations from General Contactors when it comes to Project Controls and Schedule Reporting. In this Discussion Video, he discusses the Owner's Expectation on Project Control
Satyam Reddy Karnati, JJ Barney
Sam from JJ Barney is presenting his methodology on estimation and project control from a subcontractor's perspective using simple software such as Excel to control and monitor Earned Value Management in a way that makes sense to smaller self-perform jobs where productivity tracking is critical.
Fopefoluwa Bademosi, Wentworth Institute
Fope has a Ph.D. in Project Management and is a Full-time Faculty at Wentworth University teaching Project Controls using P6 and Navisworks as BIM 4D. She joins our PMIGLC CQM Discussion Panel from Boston and due to a scheduling conflict she couldn't make it to our Live Event, so we recorded her demo for on-demand views.
Mussie Naizghi, P.E., WSU
Mussie is a Ph.D. Candidate from Wayne State University and he brings a vast amount of knowledge from research and survey he made on the Earned Value Management for the Construction Industry and how well it is being utilized by different demographics.
Yahya Janabi, QPMO Consultant
Yahya is a Scheduling and Project Control Consultant with many years of experience working on both the Contractor and Owner side. In this PMIGLC CQM Discussion Panel, he demonstrates how to use Primavera 6 (P6) and other web-based software and services to perform Project Control to Monitor Weather Delays and Analysis.
Once the Technical part of our event was over, the Fun part of our Discussion Panel started. We had a nice time to see our friends and colleagues as we would in PMIGLC Meetings, after all, PMIGLC meetings are best for networking and mingle on different topics. We decided that our next discussion topic should be on Integrated Project Delivery. We will have guests from Turner Construction, AIA, Eastern Michigan University, and AGC.
